Use:   Zanfel is a specially formulated lotion to cleanse and remove Urushiol from the skin. Urushiol is the toxin that causes the itching and rash associated with exposures to poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, poisonwood, mango, and related plants. The elimination of Urushiol from the body will, therefore, control the itching and rash associated with exposures to those plants.

Unlike soaps that must be used within 10-20 minutes of contact with Urushiol, or treatments that require continued use until the rash is gone (which can take up to 5 weeks), Zanfel washes away Urushiol at any stage of the body' reaction to the substance and often with only one washing. Some individuals with particularly severe reactions may require more than one use. Persons with poison oak and poisonwood typically require more than one washing. Most individuals experience relief from the itching within 30 seconds after Zanfel is used to wash the affected area. The rash will begin to subside within hours after washing.

Indications:   Contact dermatitis resulting from exposure to Urushiol.

Ingredients:   Polyethylene granules, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, nonoxynol-9, C12-15 pareth-9, disodium EDTA, quatemium-15, carbomer 2%, triethanolamine, water.

Directions:

  1. For best results, use Zanfel in a shower or other area where it is easy to thoroughly rinse off the product.
  2. Wet the affected area.
  3. Squeeze about an inch and a half of Zanfel onto the hands.
  4. Wet both hands and rub the product into a paste. (Zanfel uses anti-foaming agents, and thus does not foam up.)
  5. Rub hands directly on the affected area for 1 minute, working Zanfel into the skin.
  6. Rinse thoroughly.
  7. If any itch remains after rinsing, repeat steps 1-6 (only on the itching area) until all itching is gone. This is considered one application.

Warnings:   In the case of a particularly severe reaction to Urushiol, a second washing may be necessary a few hours after the first washing. The itch may return, usually in the same area, when imbedded Urushiol begins to surface. (Reapply as necessary, when itching returns.) In severe systemic cases where steroids are recommended but contraindicated for other reasons, it may require 3 to 5 days of washing with Zanfel. If symptoms persist, re-read the Q&A insert and see a physician. Note: For reactions having the appearance of thick leathery spots, further washings may be needed in those areas also. For external use only. As with most soaps, avoid contact with the eyes. If Zanfel gets into the eyes, rinse thoroughly with cold water until irritation subsides. If symptoms persist, consult a physician.
